Another Party


An orange streak in the sky! 
Before I go in I smoke 
with the roses on Fifth. 
They’re drenched from the rain
and perfectly dressed.
The party is beautiful.
The windows are French.
The windows are open
though it’s not time 
to jump out of them yet!
I would gladly 
take another life 
with less ice in my drink. 
Which I bring to the boys room
and text people I shouldn’t
because I’m a mess.
I’m emotional!
It’s the truth, I think,
listening to gossip 
swimming around
while I fix my hair
and decide what to do
with the rest of my time
here on Earth.
It’s good to be talked about!
It’s serious not to die!
And when I come out 
even the blond painter
I never liked nods at me.
We’re all going to the same
afterlife together. 
A place that doesn’t seem
to have any clocks 
though it’s exactly 10:37
and even you
(who are so far away
and may never be closer)
somehow cross the edge
of the room or my mind.
